This is a great fun series of workshops for 5-12 year olds available as after school activities or school holiday activities for kids. Students learn how to use different genres in performance (they usually have Horror, Sci-fi and Adventure at the top of their lists), and how to incorporate relevant issues into brainstorming around their chosen genre (bullying, friendship, family are usually popular).

From there, our presenters use their directing skills to facilitate further brainstorming with the group, teaching students group devising skills that they will be able to carry across into other team building situations. From week to week, in between sessions, our presenters will work on updates to the script as the students feed more ideas in. They will also source and deliver props and costumes to dress the play up as it evolves. The focus is on the preparation of an informal performance to family and friends at the end of the course.

There are always fabulous results with our Play Building courses because our presenters are flexible and see each child’s contributions as important. Things can get tricky as students negotiate (sometimes battle) to have their ideas and voices heard. We are sure to put in place systems that help them problem solve in an appropriate way, like democratic ‘blind votes’ on key points, and buddy systems where older students guide the younger ones, and more accomplished students help guide the shy ones.

When offered independently of an OOSH provider, cost for 10 week course is $280 per student.
